I just obtained a 2-cylinder, 4 HP Evinrude "Yachtwin" longshaft outboard for next to nothing. Good compression, turns over, but no spark.

The guy I got it from said he doesn't have a use for it anymore, so didn't want to bother working on it. He said it has always been a 1-pull motor and ran great the last time he used it, but that now it won't fire. He said he replaced the plugs but still won't fire. It's definitely not seized up.

Model # E4BRHLCNR
Serial # E0011506

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also, he didn't have the bottom cover. Anybody know where I could get one? I'm thinking I might have to make something.

Did you ask "the guy" , if it was a 1 pull wonder BEFORE the lower cowling up and dissapeared ?

No matter , check Ebay , Craigslist , etc...
That youngster definately needs some drawers .

These are common motors , and , tough as nails .
The 2 cylinder design is smooth at all speeds , and , they are simple to maintain and work on . It has ACED the test of time .
My 69R Johnny still runs like top .
Check your wiring , and , the ignition coils .
If the carb is good and has good compression , the only thing else needed is a properly timed spark .

BTW , I hope you didn't pay much more than $50 for a partial motor .

OK, after some research, I've found that this is a 1982 motor.

As for the lower cowling, finding a replacement is proving to be a bit of a challenge. I've checked eBay and will do so regularly, but so far nada.

Assuming I can get this thing running with some help from some of my mechanically gifted contacts, what if I can't find a stock lower cowling?

Would it be possible to make something? Obviously, somehow I want to keep salt water from splashing on the block/carb/etc.

So far, my investment in this thing is under $50.

I know it's a pig in the poke at this point, but I've spent more than that on a night drinking, so if it turns out to be a big paperweight, it won't kill me. But I'd really like to make it run and use it as a kicker for my sailboat.

Suggestions? (aside from "Use it as an anchor")

It can be a reliable engine. I'd start looking regularly for a "donor motor" that you could get the lower cowling (covers) and the air box (missing in front of the carb) and whatever else is needed.

Find and buy a service manual for your specific year and model.

If you're considering running it for a kicker / backup, then it's probably due for a complete once over on ignition and carb. Basically, a complete tune up. You can do it yourself, these are very simple little engines. Probably why they are so reliable! ;)

There is a complete 4HP Rude on Ebay right now , in your neck of the woods .
It is a complete motor , starting bid is $150 .
Just a thought ....

Keep in mind that same motor enjoyed a LONG production run , from the 60's to the 90's , and , despite some cosmetic updates , a lot of the parts interchange .

If you are really impatient , call the folks at Twin City Outboard : www.twincityoutboard.com .
They probably have 100 of what ever you are needing .

Thanks for all of the advice, folks.

I'll let you know how it works out. I'm not really in a huge hurry on this, as I'm used to using my sailboat without a motor, anyway.
