I might have a hard time explaining this one but I will try my best. The motor is a 1965 mq11c. It seems that the teeth on the end of the gear and shaft have become misaligned with the gears on the rack and link. In other words when you turn the throttle it catches momentarily then misses for almost a have a turn and catches again. Somehow the teeth have gotten out of line. Could you guys give me some tips on where to start. I lived with this problem all summer. Now I am ready to take care of it. If my explaination was too vague let me know I will try to explain futher. Thanks

some of them have a set screw, check and see if loose.

I don't see a set screw any where. The only screw Is the grip screw

The shift rod has a connecting link that has two screws. When you remove the lower unit [A/K/A gearcase] you have to remove the lower screw to disconnect the lower shift rod from the upper one.

Examine the tip of the upper and lower shift rods and you will notice that they are beveled near the end. The screw has to go within the beveled surface

When replacing the lower unit the lower shift rod must be fully inserted into the link, or the gears will not mesh.

In order to fully insert it, you sometimes need to use a flat screwdriver to widen the opening.

In all cases the screw must be removed completely in order to reinsert the lower rod correctly.

This is the most common shift solution, but there are three other possibilities, so let us hear how this works out.

I think he is talking about the gears on the throttle not the shift rod.

OK, You have to Take the handle grip off to move the shaft to reallign it. It is spring-loaded. It will be easier if you have a parts diagram so go to the BRP site for that. The 1968 model is very similar as far as the gears.

Re: need help with 9.5 johnson

OK, trying to remember this: First off, it is a rack and pinion arrangement where the first tooth on the pinion engages the first tooth on the rack. I THINK the easiest way is to remove the twist grip and slide the pinion gearshaft inward to disengage the gears and slide it back into the proper tooth engagement and reinstall the twist grip.

If that doesn't work, the whole shebang will come off the motor by removing the 3 bolts on the retainer bracket and the e-ring clips that holds the linkage to the rack. Also the fuel line and pivot bolt that holds the magneto arm. Then you can turn it upside down and get a better picture of what you are doing.

But I really think the first method is the quickest and easiest. I've had a ton of those things apart, but it's been a long time and I'm getting old. Ha!

I think that F_R is correct and that the first method will work. If you look at the rear of the gear on the tiller shaft and the face of the matching shaft, you will find matching allignment marks that will help.

The pinion gearshaft won't slide in or out. Is there s clamp of some sort on the end by the gears thaty needs to be removed first? The wife is yelling at me because I have been tinkering around in the basement all day. This might have to wait till tomorrow. Please stay with me guys.

Durn! I am almost certain that once the twist grip is off, the pinion gearshaft will slide out in a direction away from the twist grip end. It just slides in through a nylon bushing. I don't see anything in the parts list that would hold it. I suppose I could be mistaken.

Right! Look past the gear on the shaft and see if there is a snap ring on the engine end of the shaft. If there is, nudge it off and the shaft should pull out. There are a few years like that and I had forgotten.

ezeke was right. Once the snap ring came off the gear shat came right out. Now how do I realign everything properly? I see no matching alignment marks that ezeke spoke of. Do I move the rack and link all the way to the right or to the left? The more I look at it the more confused I get.

Re: need help with 9.5 johnson

The shaft is alligned by the grip position.

When the shaft was reassembled it was probably inserted upside down so that the splines only grabbed a small part before hitting the smooth face.

If the splines are still in good shape, try turning the shaft 180 degrees from what it was and see if the reattached grip will turn from stop to high speed without leaving the splines. You will probably need to experiment by inserting it several time to get the full range of gear surfaces synchronized.

ok I think I got it . I just need to replace the washers and clamp assembly at the gear. It might not be perfect but it is much better than it was. Thanks to all

Re: need help with 9.5 johnson

I just went through this a week ago on mine. So if you're still having problems keep posting. I'll let you know what I did to make it all work out.

Otherwise, happy motoring.
