need help with a champion 1J motor

Does anyone have a idea how the water pump or cooling works on a 1J champion outboard motor? I've looked at a parts diagram and do not see a impeller anywhere so how does the motor stay cool? I had it running yesterday in a barrel and it got very hot where the exhaust comes out is this normal? Any help would be great since I don't know much about these old motors. Thanks steve

May be wrong, but I believe the 1J's have a normal water pump setup with a metal impeller. Later models went to a rubber impeller. If it gets too hot to touch, don't run it...you'll fry it.
