Hello,

I have a 1973 Evinrude Fastwin 20hp (European equivalent of the U.S 18hp) and I'm trying to find a part number for the 5 screws/bolts that go through the underside of the lower motor cover and into the engine block, thus holding the block down. They have a 5/16 head if remember correctly but not sure what the thread is, just to clarify, I'm looking for the 5 smaller bolts of the 7 that hold the block down and I've checked the schematic.

Cheers

There is an error in the pictoral view in the parts book. The screw is shown as pointing down, which of course is incorrect. Anyhoo, it gives the part number as being 314490, 5ea.

Re: Need help with a part number

You have also asked this question on "another forum". I saw that first and have suggested there that the size is prob no10 UNC and that if necessary a 3/16" Whitworth bolt may fit.

If necessary to order it as a spare part then WillsMarine.co.uk in Kingsbridge are pretty good for mail order spares.

Failing that try also outboards-direct.co.uk ( Oakley Marine in Brighton) or outboardservices.co.uk in Lostwithiel

PS whats wrong with the YBW.com forums in the UK. Not as good as this one for outboard engine advice true but the UKs best boating forums by far :)

At least FR has explained about the bolts being shown the wrong way.

They are 1/4-20 with small hex heads and a high price. Older motors used fillister heads (screwdriver slot).

Re: Need help with a part number

Cheers guys, I was looking at the schematic again today and came to the same conclusion 314490 is what I need and hopefully I'll be able to find some from the places that Vic mentioned although I usually use Keypart who are very good, and I'm in no way affiliated with them but they've got me out of a few tight spots with gaskets. Sorry Vic I had no idea that forum existed, I just stumbled across these when I was trying to find parts originally.

If they are 1/4" 20 tpi you might get away with 1/4 Whitworth as that is also 20 tpi. The size of the heads might be a problem. I have not checked on the size of a 1/4Whit head. Could always file them down if it solves the problem.

At $4 each in the US I dread to think what they'll cost by the time they reach the UK

If my Father was still alive he'd have made them!
Don't know any one with a small lathe who's a dab hand at screw cutting I suppose?

Re: Need help with a part number

The reason for the small head is because there isn't room for a "normal" hex head.
