Need help with boat gears after installing gear housing 1989 alpha one

First time boat owner, bought a 1990 Maxum 21' BR. 5.0LX Mercruiser. Removed gear housing and changed water pump per the instructions in Service Manual #6. Shifter was put in forward gear as noted in manual. Now, after I have re-installed unit, put new gear oil in, I cannot get the shifter back to Neutral. Any ideas what I am missing? Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... When ya slid the lower unit back on, the prop shaft moved, causin' it to pop outa Forward,...

I use a bungee cord to hold tension on the prop shaft to keep it locked in Forward,...

Drop yer lower, 'n reset it,...

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... When ya slid the lower unit back on, the prop shaft moved, causin' it to pop outa Forward,...

I use a bungee cord to hold tension on the prop shaft to keep it locked in Forward,...

Drop yer lower, 'n reset it,...

Yeah, your lower was in reverse, so the intermediate shift shaft went back on "off a spline". Drop the lower, rotate the lower ss all the way clockwise, turn prop counterclockwise till it locks, bungee and put it back together.

Thanks for your help. I got it the third time. Now, tomorrow I get to try to adjust the shift linkage.

That's the easy part.....
