Hi everyone....I recently bought a 1994 four winns sundowner. I have had a surveyor look at it and the transom, hull, etc are dry and solid. Everything is good on the boat except......the cuddy ceiling!!!

Someone has left the bow hatch unsealed for a while and the balsa core is wet from about the midpoint of the hatch forward to the anchor locker. I removed the headliner and exposed the lower fiberglass core. The upper bow deck is in great shape with no stress cracks. I was told that this repair should be done from inside the cuddy.

My question is what's the easiest way to correct this?

1) is there something I can inject into the damaged core to re-bond ( once dried) ( might be hard from underneath)

2) can I leave it as is (dry the core somehow) and add some fiberglass supports underneath for strengh?

3) do I zip cut the bottom layer, remove the damaged core and then??

4) has anyone every done the above and then hired someone to spray foam?

Thanks in advance. ( btw boat is in heated garage)

Ayuh,..... #1 would have to be done from above, not below,...

#2 leaves the rot(aka: cancer) in place, so someday it'll spread,...

#3 would work, 'n you could replace the end grain balsa, or use plywood,....

#4 I donno where yer headed with the spray foam,.... nor why,....

Sounds like #1 is out, because the area that you described sounds to large for epoxy type of fill/bonding. ( I did that sort of thing on my sail boat for a small delamination area)

I like #3 the best. Expose and remove the rot. Rebuild the core (either wood or foam sheet) . . . Then glass over to seal and bring back the strength.

Pwe will require you to post some pictures as you go ;)
