hello to all this is my first post with my first boat restoration i have been following iboats for a while.. the boat is a 1983 sea ray 245 cruiser. I had some rot spots in the ceiling of the cabin that i cut out where the horn wires went through the deck and water was coming in. The core is balsa wood can i use plywood to patch this or do i need to use balsa wood? or any info on what to do next would help out and be appreciated. thanks in advance.

You can use plywood, depending on the contour of the surface you may need to cut into smaller pieces so it will follow the shape though.

It's not going to make big difference unless the area above the repair is a high traffic area, so just use which ever product is easiest for you.
