need help with eletrical on mercruiser 470

Hi I need help with my boats electrical. I have a 85 mercruiser 170HP/470 engine I'm trying to get it to run , i hook everything to it finally got it to start after i cleaned out the Mercarb 2 bb and it crank and started if you hold down the start switch when you let it go it stops running i don't know if there is another wire i missed to hook up or something else.i also have a question on the resistance cable listed in the manual that goes to the positive ignition coil ... where does that resistance cable go to??? thank you so much for listening

you need the resistande cable to feed ~9 volts to the coil when it is running. This will run from the ignition side of the keyswitch to the coil positive.

There is a wire from the starter or solenoid that feeds a full 12 volts to the coil when cranking, that is why your engine starts and dies when you release the starter.

thanks for your help and quick response i appricieted quick question for the resistance cable to be 9 V is it coming from the slave starter solenoid or is it coming from the starting switch???

It comes from the ignition position of the start switch.

Thanks Bruce and Jay I found the wire got a straight line to the coil and it started and stayed on so thank again for help me so quickly
