I recently purchased a 1987 evinrude 15 HP outboard that ran okay, but it needed a carb rebuild. I did the rebuild following some YouTube tutorials, and all seemed to be well. After putting everything back together, I haven’t been able to get it to start for more than a few seconds. I have tried adjusting the mixture, I’ve tried taking the carb back out and making sure the float was at proper level, and cleaned spark plugs to no avail. It will crank 25% of the time if I put the throttle wide open while cranking, yet then it bogs down and dies out immediately. What should I adjust or try first to at least get it running enough to be able to adjust it accordingly??

If the carburetor bowl is FULL it should run for at least 10 seconds.----So check all your fuel lines and right down to the pick-up tube in the tank.----And does the primer bulb go hard , yes or no ?----How did you know / determine that it needed a carburetor rebuild ????-----What other trouble shooting have you done if any ?

I decided to do the rebuild because I knew even though it ran it could run better, and it had been sitting. Also, I purchased it knowing I would need to do some work to it, and figured I’d use it as a learning tool, since this is my first outboard. I changed spark plugs and made sure they sparked, fuel lines will be replaced soon, Though they all look to be in reasonable shape, though they have age, and I’m going to purchase a fuel pump repair kit as well. I’ve given it a basic service (impeller, spark plugs, carb clean/rebuild though I didn’t do a full rebuild, but just new float, needle, and gaskets, and once I get it running I’m changing the lower unit oil). I may pull the carb off and make sure the float is in correct position again. I’m going to get the fuel pump rebuilt, then if it still doesn’t come to life I may just send it to someone if I can’t get it figured out. I’d rather do it myself though, just for the sake of learning.
