need help with id

Hi I need any info on an engine I bought i was told it was a merc red band but have since been told by one mech that it is a grey band I have never heard of one as have a couple of other mechs and I can not find any ref on the engine no ( a716434 ) if anyone can help would be much appreciated.
the cowl is the old wrap around style with a silver band over a grey band with a thin red band it has on it 115 power trim . Thanks

Sounds like a Canadian built 1986 115hp Inline 6 motor.

Thanks very much the pic is the one i was hoping you had some more pics of the internals as are the only one who picked it and if you know what they would have called ie they have red , blue ,brown . if there is such a name for it so I can try and explain it to the mech here in australia .Thanks again

What does your mechanic need to know? In the old days they used to refer to motors by thier cowling colors. In later years, they don't follow that generalized color grouping. Call it grey or whatever... to service it you just need to know the serial number (which you already have).

Those 115hp Mercs were essentally the same motor from 1980 through to the final year they made them in 1988. All had electronic ADI ignition. In 1984 onwards they had the integral transom mounted power trim and oil injection. Cowling band colors went from various shades of blue striped , to a brown stripe in 1984, then to the various greay and red stripes similar to that 1986 you have.
