I'm in the process of installing a new carb body cover (p.n. 436342) on my 1987 8hp Johnson. (a common repair so I'm told) Part number 436342 is is an upgraded design as compared to the original ones that were prone to cracking.
The new part has the idle adjustment needle in a different position and the installation instructions tell you to screw in the new idle adjustment needle till lightly seated then back it out 3 full turns as an initial idle adjustment.
Here's my problem, when I am screwing in the idle needle in it doesnt seem to seat. I had the spring completely compressed and the needle still hadnt seated and no I didnt force it or overtighten it.
Any ideas or tips?

does it grab the threads?
if so, screw it in til it stops (or lightly seated) with very lil pressure. then attempt to start and try adjusting out, you maybe very close as it is to seating. I always adjust idle mix by ear anyhow... til it runs clean then a bit of extra fuel, i prefer to foul a plug over a lean run.
also, is it plastic or aluminum your threading into, and if you remove the spring will it "seat"?

I plan to adjust it once it's running to get it just right. I just bought a factory service manual on ebay but it hasnt arrived yet so Ill wait till I get it and follow the procedure, I want to do a complete link and sync anyway.
The biggest problem I can see is that the primer stem is right in the way of the screw so Ill have to do the adjustment with it off.
Thanks.
