Hello All,
The engine is a 2006 Mercury 9.9 hp pro kicker, S/N 0R075134, model ELHPB. This motor stumbles at idle and will not take the throttle. I have soaked the carb twice and still the same stumbling and no throttle, will stall out.
I am suspecting the ignition coil. Does anyone know the resistance for the coil in this motor.? Part No. 803559A02. I have two service manuals for 9.9 and both have different values for coil.
thanks in advance

Testing is the path forward.-------Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" or more ???---------Have you run with a timing light as a " poor man's scope " to see how spark behaves when engine falters ?--------My bet is blockage in the small holes in the carburetor , sometimes folks need to clean these things 3 or 4 times to get these tiny holes clean !

racerone,
I have not used your suggestions as yet. I am hoping someone has the resistance spec for this coil. That would be my first step in the path forward. When I cleaned the carb the second time I let it sit disassembled overnight in carb cleaner, the closest thing to real cleaner available today. The first time I used spray cleaner.

It is hard to tell if a coil is good using an ohmmeter, due to the small amount of resistance, versus the accuracy of the meter. It is easy to tell if it is bad (open), however. A better test is the spark test outlined by Racerone.

Here are the specs for a standard Merc ADI ignition coil. These coils are used on many models, likely yours. In general, if you have nearly a dead short on the primary winding, and some resistance on the secondary winding, the coil is good.

Primary winding: .02 - .04 ohms
Secondary winding to either leg: 800-1100 ohms.

Chris,
This is a dual coil. book says to test across both secondaries while resistor caps are removed. I am getting 8.63K across secondaries.

Not sure what a "resistor cap" is, but if the secondary resistance cited is from the "tower" to the primary, it is probably OK. Primary resistance is nearly a dead short, right?

CDI troubleshooting said to check for an oil level too high. I did and it was. Also smelled strongly of gasoline. Drained oil and put in nearly the required amount and now it seems to run decently. Question now is, How did gasoline get into the crankcase? Fuel pump or carb?
