need help with lill o'le motor "novice"

Hey<br /> have got a 1966 3hp johnson. took bowl off carb and got stuck needle under bowl unstuck. motor now will start 1 or 2 pulls. will run choked but soon as i go to push choke in it dies. why? gas deprived? <br />scott

You may have missed some debris in the carb, in a port,or jet.<br />Also, when u replaced the carb,did you use the same mounting gasket?<br />If so, you can easily make a new one from gasket material (available at all auto parts stores), and a razor knife, using the old gasket as a pattern. Also,note this gasket has a small hole in it.Make sure this is over the port in the flange and carb.The gasket can be installed backwards, thus blocking this port.<br /><br />It might be a good idea to check the compression, fuel pump, and tank vent too.<br />Good luck

thanks for the input .. just attempted to remove fuel filter lol. the filter stays with the tank . fitting came out but no filter. guessing its staying where it is . removed entire tank now and see gum inside. cant be good . whats the best way to get this junk out and hopefully clean filter also?<br />Scott
