Well purchased used boat out of auction, got it running, got it out on the lake and was running fine and boat stopped. It was running just not moving. Ummmm forgot to check oil in outdrive and there was none!!! lol...oooops..Took outdrive off and got another one and not sure where cable hooks on to make it shift...round knob on topside but don't see where it slides or connects to. Any help would be appreciated...

Re: Need help with MerCruiser outdrive

You do not give a lot to work with here as there are several Mercruiser outdrives and different year models so to help answer you question what do you have. #1, R, MR, alpha1 gen 1, alpha1 genII or one of the bravo drives. The alpha drives you should have put the shifter in forward before removing the drive and to reinstall, if you did not break anything on removal and you are in the same year model range, put the shifter in forward, put the drive in forward and put it together, someone will need to turn the prop to keep it in gear and rotate the driveshaft so the splines will line up and then lite pressure on the prop to hold in gear until the linkage is together.

You really also need to get a drive with the same gear ratio as you're taking off.

Post exact models for the two drives and the boat and we can give you step by step directions.

Alternatively post the serial numbers for the drives and we can look up the models online.

Or some pics would be good.
