Here is the log from the router with a good USR modem attached:

Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM DOD:triggered internally
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM COM2 start to dial-up
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM COM2: baud=115200
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM DIAL2: tx ATE0V1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: tx AT&F1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: tx ATDT452 5198
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:13:06 PM DIAL2: rx CONNECT 42666/ARQ/V92/LAPM/V42BIS

***********************************

Here is the same log with a similar USR modem, but it never sounds a dial tone from the speaker, and the router lists the status as "dial failed".

Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04:30 PM DIAL2: tx ATE0V1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04:30 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04:30 PM DIAL2: tx AT&F1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04:31 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:04:31 PM DIAL2: tx ATDT452 5198
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:05:28 PM DIAL2: rx
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:05:29 PM DIAL2: tx +++
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:05:31 PM DIAL2: rx
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:05:32 PM DIAL2: tx +++
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:05:33 PM DIAL2: rx

***********************************************

The modem that is working is a USR 5868 03 external w/ v.92 firmware upgrade. The modem that is not working is a new version of the USR external, model USR 5686D, also with the V.92 firmware upgrade.

Any clue as to why one issues the "connect" message and the other doesn't?

Thanks,

Mark.

BTW, I did not test the 5686D before doing the v.92 upgrade. It may have been bad, but most likely not. I'm wondering if I need to do driver upgrade to router? Just upgraded the router firmware a few days ago and it is working great.

It sounds like it's failing to connect if it never says "CONNECT". Have you got the audio on so you can hear it negotiating? Does it dial up 4525198 properly?

You may need a couple of commas(,) in the dial string so that the modem gets dial-tone before dialing. When I was using dial-up I had to specify ATDT,,xxxxx.

Volumn is up, never hear a thing. Not the dial tone, or dial sequence.

I have a third USR that gets a dial tone, dials the number, but the line stays a dial tone.

These were all lightly used as backup connections to the office, but you never know if lightning got to them or not....

Modems... if one works, and another doesn't, don't ask why and just use it, they are finiky lil *******o's

ATDT: T - "Tone Dialing" - This command sets the modem to tone dial. This command can be duplicated by DT.

tx ATE0V1:
Echo = Off V1 - Word (verbose) format

Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM DOD:triggered internally
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM COM2 start to dial-up
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM COM2: baud=115200
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:42 PM DIAL2: tx ATE0V1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: tx AT&F1
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: rx OK
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:12:43 PM DIAL2: tx ATDT452 5198
Monday, December 12, 2005 8:13:06 PM DIAL2: rx CONNECT 42666/ARQ/V92/LAPM/V42BIS

Re: Need help with modem commands

OK, this should get you started... Commands

You can open a Hyperterminal session to test your modem.

How to Check for a Non-standard Dial Tone

* Open a terminal program such as HyperTerminal in Windows.

Note: For most operating systems, HyperTerminal is accessible by selecting Start, Programs, Accessories, Communications, and HyperTerminal. Windows 95 and NT 4.0 users should access HyperTerminal for more information.

* Select Cancel at the new connection dialog box to open the Terminal window.
* Type AT and press Enter. You may not see the letters, which is fine.
* The modem should respond with an OK message. If you did not see the letters A and T as you typed them, type ATE1 and press Enter. You should now see the AT commands as you type them, in addition to the responses.
* Type ATDT and press Enter.
* If the modem comes back with a No Dial Tone message, type ATX3DT18473304569 (or a local ISP or BBS number) and press Enter.

Note: The number in the command code is the actual number to be dialed.

* If the modem dials out instead of coming back with a No Dial Tone message, you have a non-standard dial tone.
* At this point you should either have your phone line checked or try adding X3 to the Extra Settings field. Access Extra Settings for help locating the Extra Settings field specific to your operating system. If the modem doesn't attempt to connect and it comes back with a No Carrier message, the issue may not be phone line related.

Closing the window to end your HyperTerminal session.
# Select No when the Are you sure you want to disconnect? message appears.
# Select Yes when the Are you sure you want to save this session? message appears.

Note: If none of the solutions above restores a dial tone, your modem may be damaged. While most USRobotics modems are built to withstand up to 3000 volts, lightning damage is not covered by the warranty of your product.

While you are in the terminal window , type ATM3 and hit enter.

To keep this command stored in the modems memory, type AT&W0, hit return.

To change the 'speed' of the DTMF dialing tones enter ATS11=? , replace the ?with one of the following values..
90 (average dialing speed)
50 faster
36 really fassst!
below 36, your local phone system won'tbe able to sort out the interspacing of tones and it won't drop the dialtone upon hearing the dialing sequence. Use any number between say 36 and 90. The smaller the number, the faster it dials. BTW, some modems will not go below a certain number, say 50.they will then return an error message...

Hint/Tip:If your phone jack wires are reversed (Tip and Ring reversed-that is Green and Red backwards), you won't be able to drop the dialtone using any phone .....you will be able to receive calls, but not make them ;)
