Captains, seamen and anyone that can help,
I am not able to take off my outdrive!!! This is a MC-1 outdrive(1982 vintage).
Having acquired the boat a few months ago, the previous owner did something to the shift cable... It is half the cable it used to be. About half the strands are broken.
Am I correct that the small shift lever(underneath the bellows) is supposed to be straight? Not to the right or left, but straight.
I tried everything to get it to the forward-straight position!!! I took the six mounting nuts off and tried to peek inside to look at the shift pin, tried moving the shift lever to the straight forward position(with small pry bar), and finally managed to really booger up the mating surface...in the final attempt.
Is it normal that the lever is so difficult to shift(not using the shift cable)? I am wondering if something is broken in the shift mechanism that's keeping it locked on to the gimbal housing?
I am not sure what to do next to get the outdrive off...
