Hello everyone. Please forgive an OMC guy for being here but... I did own a merc 35 a few years ago and now I need help with another motor. An 85 hp merc was given to me (no lower unit), it turns free and I wanted to see what it might cost to bring it back to life. Assuming compression is good, I can afford the normal electrical parts but don't know about lower unit. I have tried to research these numbers to no avail. I am used to OMC having a model number. I can only find a serial number on this merc. Is that the way they do it? I can't find any GOOD info going by this number. Would anyone mind helping me out? The ser num is 4298192. Does this make any sense? Thanks in advance

They werent really good at record keeping at Mercury in the 70's. Your 85 was built in 1975. Good thing is that lower units are plentiful and relatively cheap on ebay ot eh local craigslist. I se them all the time for $100 to $200.
