I have a 2005 sanger dlx ski boat with a 496, direct drive. Both mufflers were broken beyond repair, baffles busted out and end caps broken off. I need to find some new mufflers for it to get it up and running. Having a hard time finding a direct replacement for the primex mufflers that were in it. Plus they are expensive. Dimensions are: 31.5” long end to end, 5” body, 3.5” od ends. Could I replace them with a decent stainless steel muffler ?
Is there something special about these mufflers that blocks the water from coming back in them? Or could the be replaced by just about anything else as long as they fit?
I know steel will rust but maybe just something temporary till I find new fiberglass ones. Trying to get it going and on the lake ASAP.

Since your wanting quick and fix correctly later, what about more exhaust hose, open exhaust?
It will be louder

Thought about that too. Or even a piece of pvc if it will hold up to the temp. But if a stainless will last a few years then I may go that route.
The mufflers should be above the water line and it’s up hill back to the motor so a straight pipe or flow through muffler wouldn’t hurt right? Or will the engine suck up water when it’s shut off? Are the fiberglass mufflers a special design to stop that?

I don't know how the exhaust routes over board on your boat, but can guess. Thing you might have flappers on exhaust ports and there on the stern

Don't use pvc pipe, not going to work for long

Te bad with straight pipe/hose (in your case due to up hill rise) is if water comes in its going straight to the manifolds. The mufflers cause water to be blocked from a direct path back to the mans. Unless there is a regular marine water type muffler then the exhaust risers need to be far enough above the water to keep water from rushing back in during a quick stop.

They make muffler inserts to slow the water down

Look at your design and see if hose/pipe can work

PVC melts at 160 degrees. the exhaust/water mix is at 250. straight exhaust (if you have a cooling water flow issue) is over 1000F.

do not use PVC....ever...

all boat manufacturers get exhaust parts custom made, they are not standard catalog items

call sanger, buy parts, pay express shipping..... go boating.
