Ok heres the story. Was out on the boat yesterday(84 wellcraft elite 5.7) ran great 4 about an hour then I hit the wake off another boat engine just dies.. So I open my hatch all I can smell is gas pull the flame arrestore off dad trys to start it throttle in the wide open postion it fired up but gas was pouring out of the top hole on the carb And would not stay running just flooding out Im guessing this hole is an over flow. Now my question a guy told me its likely my fuel pump could this be true or is it more then likely the carb needs a rebuild and a new float? And how would I go about cheaking the pump? Thanks Phil

Sounds like the fuel pump, yes..

Please post the serial number of your engine. We need that to be able to see exactly what pump you have...

In short, there should be a plastic hose from the underside of the fuel pump to the top of the carb. Does that have fuel in it? If it does, replace the fuel pump.

Re: Need help with Rochester quadrajet carb

Sound like needle and seat trashed up. 84 should have manual pump and increase flow as motor revs and needs it. Makes sense!!!. Carb is made to handle 5 lbs of pressure but crap may have gotten into bowl and caught where is is not supposed to be. But, I'd be more concern that carb may be auto converted to marine. Marine have air-horn gaskets to prohibit fuel from coming out of body and onto hot intake manifolds. There is also a u shaped tube that assists in redirecting overflow back into motor. Perhaps this is correct for your engine and I am not understanding you correctly???? I am old! CAREFULLY pull top off carb and see if any trash. Check fuel filter too to be sure not overwhelmed and need cleaning or replacement a long time ago.. Not real convenced problem is pump!!!!! Good luck!

engine # is 6744710! I did pull that hose and no fuel was present Chris. The carb is marine 100% sure still has the red tage on it . The feul pumps out both holes in the top of carb and is redirected back into the carb and floods it out! Ive never seen anything like it its like a little fountain out of that hole.. I will recheak the hose from the pump to carb tomorrow and pull the top off carb thanks guys!! Im very machanicaly inclined work on lots of sbc but never seen gas pump out that spout lol

Pro tip- Next time, when all you can smell is gas, don't try to start it without the flame arrestor.
