Need help with thermastat gaskets

I changed thermastats in a 84 150 merc. I didn't pay attention to how the gaskets go in. Does the boot end of the gasket go in the thermastat housing or the block.

what is the engine serial # ??

The tail part (spring end) goes in first (facing the engine).
