Have a 76 evinrude that is leaking gear oil. It is leaking out of a little pressed in plug on the opposite side of the oil drain screws. It started the 3rd time I ran it after rebuilt the foot on it. I'm just wondering if it would hurt to weld it up or if I can try taping it and pull it out then trying to find another plug thing. But any solutions I would appreciate it allot trying to go fishing wile our little river has some water in it lol.

Are you sure it's not a drain hole? A pic would help.

I'm sure it not the side that the drain screws are on. It looks like a pressed in plug. There is two of them one up high then down low. I'll get a pic for you when it stops raining cats & dogs out side.

The lower unit is full of water/exhaust residue when the motor is running. There are typically drain hole(s) to allow the water/exhaust to drain from that cavity around the water pump, when the motor is taken out of the water, and to prevent water from freezing in that cavity during winter storage. These holes do not go into the gearcase and people often mistake the oily residue coming out the drain holes for gear oil.
