Re: need help with wires on 76 25HP evinrude with pics.
Dennis, I have, as my old redneck math teacher would say, a simular motor plumb took apart on my kitchen table. Nice motor, especially if ya get it dirt cheap. I can help a bit, methinks.
Yes, the white box is a NSS. The black plunger on it contacts the shifter lock lever to send current to starter only when in neutral. The wire connects to the small terminal of what the aforementioned redneck would call the starter sillynoid next to large terminal with big cable to battery positive.
People often disconnect it when they have a dirty carb and stalling problems at idle. They'll throttle it up a bit and start it in gear. Quite helpful in the middle of a camping trip if you failed to pack a carb kit with the beer and weenies, but a dignified owner, of course, fixes the problem ASAP and restores proper function.
I can't find the NSS on the online parts diagrams to save my life. Oh...wait. My motor is a 25302, originally tiller/pull start. I think pulley steer and electric start were added later, so I bet if I looked at the ES model same year (probably 25303), the NSS would be right there.
As for your wires:
Black: ignition. "M" terminals on key switch or the shorting/kill switch > points/igntion coils via split at locking tab Packard plugs. Each black wire splits to one coil and one side of the points.
Red: choke switch to choke solenoid, if applicable. Mine is push button start and manual choke, so I ain't got that. If used with key switch, must also be a wire (generally purple) from "A" terminal to choke switch.
Green connects to BATT terminal on key switch and piggybacks with the positive battery cable at the main harness plug.
White connects to "S" terminal on key switch > small terminal on starter solenoid next to big cable to starter motor.
If I were here searching for that wire info, I'd be inclined to use these search terms in the Johnnyrude forum: white, black, red, green. Maybe add the year. That would likely bring a bounty of info from people a lot smarter than I. Good luck with your motor.
