I bought a boat from a guy, and it has a 1978? johnson seahorse 70hp engine. The motor started up and ran fine. He even showed me that is has exactly 130psi in all 3 cylinders. Well I get it out on the water to find out that reverse makes the boat go forward, and forward makes it go into reverse! Also when I put it into reverse to go forward, even with the throttle all the way down it only revs to around 2000rpm and goes about 5mph. Im assuming this has something to do with the cables being reversed correct? How do i fix this?

Re: need help :(

welcome!

No lake test, I guess?

I'm trying to picture how you could reverse the cables to get that effect. Could it be a left-hand prop on a standard gearcase, or a right-hand prop on a counter-rotational gearcase?

I wouldn't worry about 2000RPM max just yet -- I'm not sure the throttle control goes all the way to WOT in reverse anyway.

yeah i just docked the boat, and thats how i figured out the problem. Yea i figured, for obvious reasons, that the motor wont go into WOT in reverse. how hard is this to fix. should I just have someone do it?

If somebody put a prop from a counter rotating engine (spins CCW) on a standard engine (spins CW), you'd just need a new prop.

Edit the title of your thread to be more desciptive, somebody here can answer this question, but most folks don't read every thread. This is a real curious situation.

If you can't edit the title, just start a new one.
