Was out today cruzing at 3400 RPM for about 10 miles or so ... then I went to WOT , 30 seconds later the boat shut off ??? I had to pump the gas to start it and it wouldn't stay running unless I feathered the gas ... so after an hour or so , it was good to go . so we went fishing and on the way back ... I tryed the WOT again ... and same thing , but this time it started back up . The boat it a 76 SeaRay 351 Ford 4160 Holley 4 bbl OMC drive electric shift . What do you guys think ??? I checked the fuel filters and they are clean I checked the fuel water thing and no water in it . ?????

If it is not running itself out of fuel, I would suspect a coil.

Will this happen if you leave the fuel filler cap loose?

Re: Need help

It was like someone turned the key off , and the first time it happened when I had to feather the gas to keep it runnung ... I couldn't put it in gear or it would stall right away . I felt the coil to see if it was hot , but it wasn't .

Re: Need help

How old is the fuel pump. Good chance that is the problem. Fuel pumps don't just die, they go in fits and spurts. I've had my 302 act the same way and a neighbors merc just went thru the same thing. The motor can get up to a certain load/speed and the fuel pump just won't deliver. You pump and feather the throttle and you're getting the last little bit of fuel from the accelerator pump. Then it dies, sometimes to start right up and some times not. Classic fuel pump failure.
