Hello all, brand new here so i don't know if this is the right place to put this. So i recently bought a 1986 sea-ray 230 cuddy with the 260 5.7 cruiser. I took it out for the first time yesterday, and noticed it was overheating, let it cool down, and limped back to the boat launch, i know the impeller is bad, but i was getting it back, and shut it off to back my truck in and i started it, it started, stalled, restarted and stalled, boat was close to truck at this point to i just reeled it in, not thinking much i get it back to my house, and go to start it and all i here is a click, from the starter, the starter slave solenoid has power, and is going to the starter, but the starter click. Could the engine have seized up or is it the starter? I took the starter out and its a older starter and smells like its burnt inside. I hope i didn't seize it anyway to tell?

May want to check for hydro lock. Take plugs out and spin the starter see if water comes out of cylinders.

Its a click and not a louder clunk as the starter engages and not turning.
Starter may have given up the ghost, but pull some plugs to see if any are wet.

Welcome to iBoats. Great people here and lots of knowledge to be had.
I would say put a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft and try to turn in manually. Saves time to pull plugs, but might have to anyway.

:nono: do not put a wrench on the crank. It can snap off and then you have bigger problems.

As AD said, do not crank on the nose bolt! Then you end up with a broken bolt or stripped threads and still have the original problem.

Pull your plugs! If you got water in the cylinders that needs to be seen to.

And get the merc manual for that drive and motor and go through the maintenance items. All of them. You must assume that none of it was done by the previous owner. You do not want to find all the problems a neglected boat can have while miles from the dock. Walking back sucks.

You can access the manuals online at boatinfo.no
