Hi
Ive got some water in cylinder after installing a new manifold and cylinder head gasket.
When I took off the riser I could see water in the exhaust passage in the manifold.
When I blew with compressed air into the exhaust passage i could see the water in the manifold rise/move. I disconnectet the hose from the termostat housing to the manifold, and the water would not rise/move when I blew in the manifold, but I could feel air coming from the housing.
I took the cylinder head off and turned it upside down with the manifold connected and closed all hoses, I saw water coming out in the exhaust passage where the riser should be.
Does this meen that the cylinder head i bad?
Regards
Affa

You said you installed a new manifold? How about the riser?

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Hi
The riser is 2 years old, but I checked it, and it was fine
I guess I need to find out how the water could get from the cylinderhead into the exhaust passage, is there a natural possibility, or does it mean the head is broken? I read in another tobpic that there was a possibility that had to do with carburator connection/passage.
The strange thing is that everything was fine when I took the boat home, and all off this happened when I ran it on muffs at home.
Regards
Affa

You checked the riser? How. You need to pressure check it.

OK, thankyou both!
I get confused off the connection between the exhaust passage in the manifold and the water, as I told, and this is without the riser connected, are there some ways the air can blow into the water passage in the cylinderhead?
Regards
Affa

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Hi Again
To day I found a leak in the cylinder head, so I need a new one. I was wondering if I can use a cylinder head from a car engine, and if some off you know what cars that had this engine?
Regards
Affa

The 2.5 liter was used in autos, but I think the 3.0 was industrial/marine use. I could be wrong, maybe it's the other way around. Regardless, the marine engine wasnt used in cars.

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

hello affa:)
good to see your not snowed in :) .
the head your looking for. there were 2 maybe 3 different intake/exhaust port configurations. the 153 cid chev motor was used in the nova and the truck as well as millions of post office jeeps. some have the correct port configuration. other than that its call about and find one. a GM dealer in your area should be able to help you with the casting numbers. all new cyl heads are made in mexico now but even from volvo and merc they have blue and white GM labels on the shipping crate. In your situation I would be careful about buying a used one and hoping for the best. the shipping will exceed the cost of a new one.
good luck and keep posting.

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Hi, and thanks Rodbolt!
I am just about to get snowed in, so I felt unlucky when I got everything together again, and found the broken head, I planned to put the boat on the sea just to test the shifting, and then put it away for the winter, but I have some month to get it working again.
It ran fine and the valves seemed to be well adjusted, I got a liitle unsure of how hard I shoulg tightened before the full turn, is that when I cant turn it anymore, or when the lifters starts to get pushed down?
Regards
Affa

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

hello
affa
inside the lifter body, the dished part that the pushrod sits in. that dish is called the plunger. what you want is both valves closed (base of cam) then tighten the adjusting nut while rotating the rod with your fingers. take up all slack. as soon as the slack is taken up the rod will have resistance to turning. then turn the nut 3/4 to 1 turn further. that should depress the lifter plunger about .05 to .100 of an inch. (ill let you convert it :) ). if the lifers are used and full of oil it may take a few minutes to allow the lifter plunger to expell the excess oil.
good luck and post me back if your still not sure.

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Thankyou Rodbolt!
I bought new lifters as you suggested and had them in oil over night, Ill try to get a round measurement stick so I can check it with, it might take a time before I get a new head though, did you mean I should buy a new original one?
Regards
Affa

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Hey Affa, contrary to popular belief, you should not soak your lifters in oil. This fills the lifter and will not allow the plunger to be depressed as was said before(.005-.100). The reason for depessing the plunger is as the cam and lifters wear there will still be a 0 clearance of the rocker to valve stem (via .005- .100) plunger depth.(The whole purpose of a hydraulic lifter). Also be careful of over tightening the rocker or you will have valve float at high RPMs due to lifter pump up. Hope this helps. JW454.

Re: Need I new cylinder head ?

Hi again.
Ive just found that there is a remanufactured cylinderhead I can use, I guess it is a mercruiser part.
I was wondering if I should get new rocker arms and pushrods as well?
Regards
Affa
