I just aquired a Chrysler Mod 303 3.5 Hp OB motor ser. # 2562. Can anyone tell me what year this was made? I have a parts manual coming but am looking for an operator/service manual. Does anyone out there know where I can get a copy of one? Also looking for a colored picture of one to repaint / decal the top as it has been painted over with blue paint. Thanks for your responses. Jerry

Re: Need Info on 3.5 Hp Chrysler

Jerry,

I have a 3.6 air-cooled, which is the same as the 3.5, except mine has a water-cooled leg, which gave the designation 3.6. Bought mine new in 1974 or so. Mine is model 32HC. Mine is a West Bend 5.18 cu. in. single-cylinder powerhead, and has a left-rotation prop. It has a white plastic cowl, and the rest is factory-painted gold. I also have a parts motor. If you'd like, you can send me a photo, and I'll be happy to compare it with what I have.

If this is like yours, I have a spare service manual.

Thanks Paul, But I believe mine to be an early 60's model or even earlier. Waiting to get parts list to see if it has date info on it. Mine has no plastic cowling. Has egg shaped metal gas tank on top with pull start in the middle. Made in Hartford, Wisconson. Trying to submit pictures but my computer won't read my thumb drive with SD card for some reason. Will try to connect my camera direct. Thanks again for your help. Jerry

Jerry, your motor is indeed a 60's motor. It's actually a West Bend design dating back to the 50's, and made into the early 70's. Paul's motor is the newest version, but Chrysler switched to a more modern gas tank and cover. I believe the motor itself is the same as yours.

The West Bend/ Chrysler motors were also produced for Sears, JCPenney and Wards. I have the JCPenney version of your motor.

Try the Chrysler Crew web site for pictures of your motor. They are at http://www.geocities.com/thechryslercrew/ and have brochures you can view.

Thanks Joe. I have received a parts manual and a service manual. Didn't see any pics of my motor at the web site you referred to unless I missed something. Anyone having or knowing where to get colored pics of this motor, it would be greatly appreciated. Right now it is flat black on top with gray bottom. Would like to paint to original colors.

Jerry,

The parts book may descripe touch-iup paint colors. Mine does. How well is yours running?

I'm having a fuel starvation issue with mine; May need to replace the needle and seat in the carb; not sure yet. Swapped for my parts carb and same issue. Odd.

Thanks Paul. I haven't run mine yet as I've been working on my Johnson for my bass boat. I wasn't sure of the fuel mixture, etc. Now that I have the service manual, I'll clean it up and pittle with it a little before winter sets in. then I guess I'll put in the seafoam until spring.

For info and parts for old outboards, American Outboard Motors and Salvage in Maryland is a great source. They also have a good supply of decals for outboards.

I had one of the Sears air cooled outboards on my sailboat in the early seventies. Never had a problem with it.
