Hoping some one can help me out with this. I just came across a nice 1982 60hp that has PT&T on it. From reading the posts on here I am of the understanding that these units can be problematic. Is that true?

Never owned one so I have no clue as to what to look for with this PT&T unit. I see that it could get costly if any repairs are needed. This is the type with the pump motor on the side of the transom clamp.

Experience and opinions on this would be exremely helpful as I'm really thinking of buying this engine.

Those early tilt/trim units looked somewhat peculiar, but they work just fine. They've been replaced by the later model unit which mounts inside the transom brackets. Your unit is not so much that it's a problem-as trying to repair it if it does not work. Many of the parts are NLA, so you get into scrounging around for discontinued parts. I've had two engines with that same system and never had a problem with either, but that was years ago. You can check out the factory exploded parts diagram at this website: epc.brp.com If you need any parts, the factory numbers are listed. Not unusual to buy a junked engine just to get salvage parts for the trim system.

First thing I would do is check out the epc.brp.com and look up the mtr as suggested by Emdsapmgr. You can see what prices are and availabilty is.
