Need info on temperature sensor on air compressor on 250 Pro Xs

Have a Mercury 250 Pro XS. Started the motor on hose and would rev up some than die. Took cowling off to look at motor. There was a wire tan/blue disconnected off the air compressor temperature sensor. The other two tan/black wires where hooked up. What is the purpose of this setup and could it cause this problem?
