I have a 79 thundercraft viking ss18 and would like to buy an owners manuel for it? have lots of questions on it, like how much does it weigh with a 140 io merc? how large is the gas tank?(i havent filled it yet) can you convert one of the bow storage areas to a live well?(it has a drain to the outside below the water line now) how often do you change the oil and filter? any other maintence that should be done? the ez loader trailer, what size is the axel? want to replace the hubs with ones with lugs. thanks for the help. bob

Well, if it is the same company as the thundercraft I had I believe they were made in Tennessee. You could put a live well under one of the bow seats but you might find that the bottom of the hull begins step up or rise so there won't be a flat area where you could put something directly on the floor and you would half to suspend or mount whatever you use to make the livewell from from the seat frame itself. I wouldn't know on the fuel tank, the only way to find out is to fill it up, unless it's where you can see it and measure it. Does it have one tank or two? I bet it's only 18 gallons.

Have you had the boat in the water? If so have you checked the bellows that run between the outdrive in inboard motor for leaks?

Replacement hubs can be bought here on Iboats I'm sure. I've seen them at Academy sports, and some auto parts dealers like O'reilly's.

The axle you can measure. Have any pics of the boat?

Yep. Finding an owner's manual is going to be like finding a needle in a hay stack. You could surf the net, check ebay. I ended up stripping the 1978 thundercraft that I had, I mainly bought it for the outboard motor. I found out (at least on mine) that the cleats, the bow rails, and the lights were all fastened down with nuts and stainless steel bolts instead of wood screws, like some of the other boats I've stripped.

The local marina would of answered your questions most likely on the maintenance. I'm sure somebody here can tell ya as well.

You will be disappointed if you did find an owners manual since it covers the boat only, and in very general terms. The manual you are after is a service manual for your engine and outdrive. Those are available on-line. Determining the size of the axle is a matter of measuring it. Remove the hub, clean the spindle and measure the area where the two bearings sit. If the bearing surface is 1-1/16 inches in diameter for both bearings you have a 2000 - 2200# axle. If the outer bearing surface is 1-1/16 inch and inner is 1-3/8 you have a 3000 - 3500# axle. Hubs are selected based on the bearing sizes so you have basically two choices depending on what axle you have. Oil and filter change intervals are a matter of preference but as a minimum it is once a year. Tune ups as required.

Ayuh,...
As noted above,...
An Owners Manual for a 30 yea old boat, from a company that's out of business is probably Not going to happen...
That said,...
The factory service manuals for your motor,+ drive can be found Here....

Ayuh,... It's a MASSIVE file,.. something Over a gig...

Depending on your connection,...
Right click the link,+ click "Save to Disk",.... Then go to bed...
It should be saved to your harddrive by the time you wake up...
Once you've got In your 'puter,.. It'll load rather quickly...
