I have a 1997 Glastron, Volvo Penta 5.7L GS and I'm am planing to change out the raw water pump impeller on my boat myself. Can anyone please provide me with any links, utube video or step by step instructions for this. I have a shop manuel but the instructions are somewhat confusing and pictures of the water pump in the manuel does not look like mine. I would just like some info to help me along the way so I don't get into something I'll wish I hadn't later on.

Thanks for any info given.

Re: Need information on changing Volvo Penta 5.7L GS impeller

3 boats ago, I had a 99 5.7GS. The pump was on the front lower left of the engine. 2 or 3 bolts held it on to the engine, and 2 hoses connected to it. It was very easy to replace. I took the pump off completely, brought it inside so I could see what I was doing. 3 screws hold on the 'cover', those screws need to be removed to get to the impeller.

Be sure to use the lube that comes with the new impeller on the impeller blades. If it doesnt come with lube, I put a light coating of dish soap on it.

Thanks for info. I gave the wrong engine info by the way, if it really matters. Mine is a 5.7 GL instead of GS.
What is so confussing is everything I found on the model I have shows a totally different set up. My pump is on the lower left side like you said but the hoses come in from the rear behind the belts. Everything I have found on replacing the impeller shows the housing and hoses on the front. It all seems simple enough but I'm trying to figure out if I can just remove the impeller housing to get to the impeller or do I have to lossen the belts and remove the whole pump in order to do the work.

Again thanks for the response.

Yours is just like my 4.3Gi, and my previous 5.7GS. Nothing unusual or different about it, really.

My hoses come from the back too. I remove the hoses, remove the drive belt, and take the pump off completely, where I bring it inside to my garage where I have a bench and good lighting to replace the impeller and re-seal it back up.

Re: Need information on changing Volvo Penta 5.7L GS impeller

You need a the full model number.

It will look something like this:
5.7GLPBYC

The important part is the section that contains "BY". It could be "LK", "HU" or others. That is the part that tells you the year range it was made.

Great info link, thanks. I keep my boat at my lake house so i'll have to go there and get the info you ask. Had it wrote down but the wife didnt see it important when cleaning the house so it got trashed lol!

On the Boatinfo website the LK service manual pictures are basically junk, but according to the directions Technologic has it down. Pull off the belt then the pump assembly which holds the impeller.

Re: Need information on changing Volvo Penta 5.7L GS impeller

The full model number is PLKR.

so its 5.7GL PLKR

Ha! I knew it. My last boat (5.7GS) was an LK and my new boat has twin 4.3GI LK's. We have exactly the same setup.

While the pictures aren't perfect, here are the pages from the manual that show replacing the impeller. It's a lot easier to remove the complete pump from the engine than to try to replace the impeller while the pump is installed on the engine. Make sure you don't get the hoses reversed.

Like I said too and Don concurred. WAYYYY easier to remove the pump and replace the impeller on the bench.

Thanks a for everything! I plan to remove the pump soon like you said. After inspecting it, there would be no way to complete it without removing it. Great info, thanks guys!

Re: Need information on changing Volvo Penta 5.7L GS impeller

One more question please. Which Impeller kit do I buy. Volvo Penta online cataloge give two part numbers, one is 3862281, the other is 21213660. When I looked both up the 3862281 has several gaskets and the other only appears to have one.

You can find free service manuals on boatinfo.no. That's where I found those same pictures at. They also have service manuals for your drives too.

Go there and click "manuals" which is 2nd from the left at the top. Choose volvo penta then scroll over to LK series for your engine.
