2bbl. or 4bbl. Carb. ???????
That's the Only Real Option, Without getting Into the Engine.........
the 4bbl. is worth about 25/30hp........

Re: Need more performance??? help

You'll Absolutely Need a new Intake Manifold to bolt on a 4bbl. carb......
1996 is a transitional year....
The Pre-Vortec motors have 12 bolts holding the Intake Manifold on........
The Vortec uses only 8 bolts.......
I'm Guessing, But you're Probably Not running in Salt over there in Ohio.....
You Could use an Aluminum Intake from a mail-order parts house.....
Or, a Better approach, Is to find a Mercruiser Cast-Iron 4bbl. Vortec Intake.............

On the Exhaust side, If you're running Thru-Prop exhaust, That's Your Choke-Point.....
Just going thru-Hull is a Plus......But, Awlfully Noisey......
Headers are Big$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
But, Available......

So...let me get this straight. You want more power yet you don't want to spend any money? 4bbl your best bang for the buck. Your current exhaust is already pretty free flowing, leave it alone.
If thats not enough, then always remember....There's no replacement for displacement.

Horsepower always costs money.....when you install it, and when you use it.

You wont make any more power with open exhaust. And yes it will sound stupid. Its a v6. Go with the 4v or another boat with more power. You can make 225 hp if its a vortec. Stingray has a boat that does 60 with this motor. Thats pretty impressive. Boat is 19'.

Re: Need more performance??? help

Quick tip that costs less than 50$ and will help performance a little.
look at your transom assy. If you still have ribbed exhaust bellows ( the smaller rubber tube about 3in in diameter) you can install an exhaust boot(a half tube with a smooth bore )in it's place.
It is a little louder and works best on a v-8 but will help the 6 cyl

The boot is a merc part by the way.

Exactly! That's what I tell the little snot-balls in their Honda's who try to race me.

Dropping in a V-8 may be less expensive (or equal to) than trying to hot-rod your V-6.

Then again, buying another boat (+ cash from your sale/trade) with power to suit your needs might be even more cost-effective.

D.
