I have a 2004 Glastron SX175 (17 ft) powered with a Volvo Penta GL 4.3L IO. I have a standard 14 1/4" x 23 pitch Michigan SS 3 blade prop. The boat will do 58 mph with one or two people, which is excessive for my lake, and the boat tends to be unstable at that speed. I need more power for low to moderate speed towing and better take-off for skiing. I am considering going to a four blade prop. Is this the best option, and if so should I stay with the same pitch to gain the power rather than stepping the pitch down as recommended when switching to a four blade prop? Or would a three blade prop with a different pitch be a better option for my setup?

Re: Need more power,less speed

You need to figure the RPM at full throttle into things . . . are you reaching the recommended RPM range with the current prop?

That is a lot of engine for that boat, so you may have to limit the throttle, if possible.

You will enjoy the bite of a 4 blade, and you could probably go with a 21" pitch or even a 20" pitch.

Thanks for your help tpenfield and Philster. I have ordered a four blade 20 pitch prop. Hopefully this will provide what I need.
