Is it possible to change a 28 special johnson to a 35hp motor? I know they have the same power head, but what is different?

Re: Need more power!

If Chinewalker comes by, he can tell you more, but here's what I know. The 28hp is pretty much the 1956 30hp reincarnate. The 33hp is the 35hp reincarnate. The 30hp and the 35hp do not share the same powerhead; very similar and many parts are interchangeable, but not the same.

BTW, to attract more expertise, change the title to something like "28hp vs. 35hp". That'll draw in the big twin pros.

Thanks for the imput, I was looking up power heads here on iboats and I got the same part# from 25-35hp. seems like a good deal on the motor, but I just dont need another sub 30 motor laying around

Re: Need more power!

BoatBuoy, he's talking about the 1980s era 33-cube motors, not the '50s Big Twins...

To answer your question, the 28SPL is essentially the 35hp model, with a few cost saving things built in. The 28SPL came out after the crossover to prop-rated horsepower. The 35 became the 30hp. Same motor, same power, rated differently. The 28 was the 30hp powerhead mounted to an older 1970s style 25hp lower unit (without through-hub exhaust).

So, to answer your question, you already have the 35 (as rated prior to 1985)...
