It is my understanding that johnson 9.5's from mid 60's to early 70's did not change much. If I am wrong please correct me. Anyway, I need a new pullstart spool and spring assembly. I wound my old one a little tight to say the least. As you can tell I am not a boat mechanic but I love to tinker. Can anyone help me find this part. If I cant find it I may need to scrap the motor but the rest of it is in good shape. Thanks, woody74

Hi Woody,
I would start locally - check your local marinas and if they're not helpful at the front counter (you want a part for a WHAT??) then you might be better off cornering one of the actual grease-under-hisfingernails mechanics and see what they do with the old clunkers. See if they've got an old outboard graveyard, or if they sell old motors off to a sideline outfit. The lower units were a common weak spot on those "mushroom motors" and there are quite a few otherwise good motors around taking up space on racks. With a little sleuthing and good luck you might be able to track down a parts motor with the items you need.
Failing that, there are several online outboard salvage guys - Twin City Outboard, etc.

- Scott

Scott,
Thanks, I went down to the local marina and they said "you want a part for a WHAT??". Funny how you would know that. I'll talk to some of the mechanics and see if cant run down some motor parts. Thanks for your help. -woody74

Like Chinewalker said, sometimes dealers or independents have boneyards they might let you pick through. I'd call around.
