I need a new set of manifolds and I guess I will replace the risers also the set I have is cracked do to left water in them. I have another set I need to really see if they are any good before I spend the money on them. How often are they supposed to be replaced on fresh water boats. I am not sure who has the best deals and are the aftermarket ones from aftermarket marine and doug russel any good. 85 mercruiser 350.

Re: need new manifolds

The common brands are the Mercruiser OEM, Barr, Osco, GLM, Sierra.

I would avoid the GLM and favor the Mercruiser OEM, Osco or Barr. Doug Russel web site looks like they carry the GLM brand.

I got mine from ebasicpower . . . you can also search the iboats site for some as well.

I am going to look around some more but so far I have found the Barr shipped from After market marine for 525.00 I guess that is the cheapest place to get manifolds unless the crap GLM ones.

Ayuh,... I've got a set of GLMs on my 4.3l,...

I had to remachine, 'n flatten the surfaces to get the gaskets to stop leakin'....

So far, so good... wouldn't buy 'em again....

How long do these manifolds really last in freshwater use. I have another set that I believe are original for the boat, when he bought the new motor he got new ones but they are cracked know.

Re: need new manifolds

I have also located a set of new sierra manifolds with comparison prices. I am assuming they are okay to use. I also was doing some more searching and found were in freshwater the manifolds never go bad unless they are not winterized corectly just the gaskets go bad. So maybe the original set I have that he gave me with the boat I need to look at them and try to use them and save the money to fill the gas tank with.

I worked at a marina for about 13 years back in the day and I never heard of anyone having to replace exhaust manifolds. We are in a fresh water area . The only one that gave problems was the first MCM 120 engines . They were actually called a 110 . These engines had an aluminum spacer plate in the exhaust manifold that would corrode through .
There was a conversion kit that consisted of a new style manifold similar to the ones used today on the MCM 140 . They were the only engines that ever had to ever have a manifold change coming form a fresh water area I recently talked to some area dealers about the much beleaguered 4.3 " bat wing" manifolds . They went on to say they never heard of a manifold or subsequent engine failure with these manifolds either . One of them was Skipper Bud's . A huge dealer in the Midwest. They said replacement was only called for if the owner forgot to drain them

That is good news that I can actually use the extra set he gave me and just replace the gaskets. I will pour acetone in them and double check them but that means 500 dollars I can put into buying material to make a couple seats and even maybe fill the 100 gallon gas tank that is empty.
