Need new water pump housing on 50 hp mercury???

Hello everyone....

I've been working on my grandpa's 1977 50 hp mercury s/n 4707302 for him the last couple weekends. It stopped squirting water out of the tell tale so he figured the impeller was bad because he had the same thing happen several years ago and thats what it was.

I got a new impeller, gaskets, wear plate, water tube seal, etc and installed them and I'm still not getting any water out of the tell tale. The boat was in the water during testing so I know it was summered deep enough.

I hooked a garden hose up to the water tube when I had it apart and I got a real good stream out of the tell tale that way so I know its not clogged up.

To my dad and I the housing looked fine, but what else could be our problem??? We even replaced the gaskets and o ring under the base of the pump, and the inlet to the pump is perfectly clear.

My grandpa doesn't have a lot of extra cash to throw at it so he is doesn't really want to buy a water pump kit with housing for $60-$70 and not have it fix the problem.

Do you guys think that the housing is probably the problem or is there somthing else we are over looking??????????

Thanks for all you help guys.......
My grandparents are ready to go fishing and I think if it takes to much longer to fix they'll be rowing there 26' pontoon boat to get out on the lake......... LOL

when you put the new impellar on the shaft, lock it in with the key right? then slide the housing down the shaft, turning the drive shaft clock wise, so the the impellar blades are turning in the right direction? this is the only thing that i can think is wrong. either the impellar isn't locked on the drive shaft, or the blades arn't in the right direction.
hope this helps

Yeah the key was on the shaft and we rotated the shaft CW when putting the housing over the impeller.

When running sometimes it would spit a little water here and there and for about a half second it had a small stream........

Re: Need new water pump housing on 50 hp mercury???

Ive just replaced my impellor on a 78 Merc and when I tried the garden hose using the muffs with the engine stopped I could not get the water to come through the pee hole which was I presumed because the impellor was stopping it going through as the engine was not turning.

As soon I started the engine the water came through really well so all I can think of is that if water is going through with the garden hose and not without it there is still a problem with the impellor or pump housing and gaskets somewhere.

Ive not yet had chance to try mine out in the water yet though so hoping mine still works as it should.

Good luck

Jon
