Around 1998 I purchased a new 5.8 OMC/Ford (351)engine and it has been in storage until now. In the meantime, OMC, as most people know went out of business...but a number of after-market parts are still being made.

Upon installing this new engine, I find I am in need of what is described in the OMC parts books as a "Oil Dipstick Assembly"...in simpler terms, an 'Oil Dipstick Assembly' is the oil dipstick, dipstick tub, and related fasteners that take the place of the engine oil pan plug located on the bottom port side of the engine. While one OMC parts dealer (Doug Russell Marine) shows a picture of the system...the same states it is "not available". When I called them, they said it 'might be available' but it is not in their parts stock.

Anyone having one of these can quickly note the 'dipstick tube and fastener system' is quite different from those on an automobile. As to why I just couldn't switch over to my old one...the fact is that salt water had eaten mine up to the point that the tube cracked off in process of removal...and the fittings have been lost thanks to my daughter pleasing me by 'cleaning up my shop!. Lastly, on the 'used market', no one either has it...or it is on a working engine and they are unwilling to sell it to sell the part without the whole motor.

Your help would be appreciated.pu his was cracked at the fittings and the fittings were frozen beyong removal

Volvo used the same Ford 5.8 until 1996, they did a joint venture with OMC and bought out the sterndrive divsion of OMC after that. Check the diagrams in the Volvo section on the doug russel site, and look at the pix of the oil tube for the Volvo, to me it looks the same as the one in the OMC pix, and in the Volvo listing there are part #s for it, so it may be the same part. Worth looking at.

In the event you can not locate the part, and you want to use the boat right away....

Couldn't you insert a brass hose fitting (with shut off) into the bottom of the pan, then using 2 stainless hose clamps, attach a clear (see thru) plastic hose that runs up the side of the engine, just like a sight glass.

Do a new oil change, inserting the specified manufacturers amount of oil, and mark the plastic hose with a magic marker so you know where the FULL mark should be sitting.

You'll then be able to check your oil level at a glance rather than pulling a dip stick out to check.

Just a thought..
If you make the plastic see-thru hose long enough to reach out your hull drain hole, you could stick it out thru the hull when it was time to change your oil -- OPEN the shut off valve and let her rip, thus avoiding the pain of using a vacum pump to change your oil.

You'll be the coolest dude on the block!

Iboats.com offers the following items to make your life a little easier:
Oil Drain Hose and Necessary Fittings

Reverso 2 Block Valve Assembly

West Marine sells an oil drain kit all ready to go with the see thru plastic line and pump.
West Marine's Fancy Oil Drain Kit

Here are a couple of links to dip stick kits.
One is a universal that you cut to your specs and the other is a Ford racing part, which I'm certain can be ordered for a 351. There are no doubt mumerous sources for these and a hot rod shop in your town probably has just what you need. If the Ford part isn't compatible with your marine setup, the Moroso could be adapted to work and some J B Weld will hold anything in place.

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MOR-25970

http://store.summitracing.com/product.asp?d=12&s=66&p=4698&searchtype=ecat

Hope you find this helpful.

Regards, crt.
