Need opinions - 1982 Reinell

Guys -

I'm going to go look at a 1982 Reinell tomorrow. I'm mostly looking for some spare sterndrive parts (transom and lower unit) but it comes with a trailer too.

The description I have is "1982 20 foot Reinell Tri-hull with inline 6 and Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive 1.65R serial 5297454" and a Shorelander trailer. Unfortunately the seller doesn't have pictures atm, so I'm going to drive out to see it. He says the hull leaks and he doesn't have time for a project. So I'm figuring the hull might be punctured or rotten.

My question is this: If the boat is in fixable shape, is it resaleable? I'd have to assess whether I want to do the work, etc. but do you think someone would buy a repaired 1982 Reinell that might not have the original transom parts, assuming I put a fair price on it?

I don't want to be stuck with a "hanger queen", I've had too many of those. Is Reinell closer in quality to Grady White or Bayliner?

Supposedly the engine runs well and the drive is in good shape, so it's worth it to me for that, but if the trailer is good too and I can sell the boat with or without repairs, that'll factor into my offering price.

Hi Eric!

There is no doubt you have the skills to do a rebuild/restore of that magnitude. My concerns are really with the economy. A lot of folks just don't have the money to spend on a good used boat, or even a quality rebuild like you would do. Assuming that Reinell has a good resale value, and have a great reputation, the buyers may just not be there due to the economy.

"1982 20 foot Reinell Tri-hull with inline 6 and Alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive 1.65R serial 5297454" and a Shorelander trailer.

Ayuh,... Somethings Very Wrong with that,...

I Belive,... I-6s were Long Gone by 82,+ Alpha 1 were not yet Intro'ed...
Is Reinell closer in quality to Grady White or Bayliner?

Original OEM Quality means quite abit less when talkin' 25 year old hulls....

A Classic hull may have Classic values,...
A 30 year old boat, even runnin' is still a 30 year old boat...

Hmm... I think I'll approach it as a potentially repairable runner. The poor economy means people will look for cheap boats they don't have to make payments on, too. I'd think any boat recently repaired and certified non rotten (with pictures, even) would sell for something. Dunno if I'd make my money back, but maybe. If the engine is good, whatever it is, I can probably sell it in the spring since I don't need it... lotsa folks are gonna need replacement marine engines then :)

I looked up all I could find on that info... the drive system that serial number belongs to is an MCM 165, which is supposed to be an inline 6, with an Alpha I gen I drive. The owner says the boat is a 1982, but he also says it was a project he didn't get time for and the previous owner didn't mention the transom rot.

Since I am mostly interested in the transom and drive as replacements/spare parts for my old pre-alpha, I'll check those out to see if they're working/looking ok. If they're worth it, anything else is extra/gravy. At the price I'd be paying, they're much cheaper than even an SEI for a drive replacement. Plus, hey, free trailer :)

Thanks for the info/comments, still love to hear from anyone who can give an assessment of the general quality of Reinell boats, for my interest. I'm going to go look at the thing in about 4 hours, so if you're gonna comment, then hurry :)

I'll post pics in this thread if I get the thing.

Ayuh,... By 1982, the MCM 165 was the infamous 470... The I6 was long gone...

Like I said, the I-6 was Never offered with the Alpha 1...

Okay, hmmm... I love a mystery.

Hey, if it's a running 470 (the owner says it IS running) then I ought to be able to sell that, too... there have to be a few people still stuck with them :)

The serial number decodes as (I only have access to a table, not a real decoder program):

165

GM

250

6

1979-1981

5178959-581343

So it should be an inline 6, 250 cubic inches, probably with an R drive (the owner says he believes it's an alpha I gen I, so maybe it's a replacement?)

I guess I'll see what it really is... I'm hoping I don't show up after a 40 minute drive and find out it's a rusted solid pre-alpha or older drive someone grafted onto a 470 engine...

That boat was not known to be much in the way of quality. I would think it would be like restoring a Yugo and attempting to sell it.

Actually, there are some people who are very fond of Yugos. There are also people who enjoy being kicked in the crotch, though.

Well, Bond-o pretty much called this one. It was an inline 6/250ci engine, but not in great shape (probably running, but too cold to try starting it). The transom plate/bellhousing was not one I could make use of, and in fact it looked to need some work, at least a new set of bellows and probably bearings, maybe a shift cable even. Even though the boat was an '82 I suspect it was a 1981 or 1980 design/manufacture.

The drive turned out to be a pre-alpha, possibly rusted given the condition of the bellows.

The transom was mulch, and the guy thought the rest was solid, but I could tell by looking it was probably in need of the unholy trinity (transom, stringers, floor).

Not a bad looking bowrider, though.. less extreme tri-hull than I've seen elsewere, plenty of space for a fishing deck or skiiers. Gelcoat had some spidering and a few dings, but not bad for a 28 year old boat. Interior needed a refresh for fashion's sake but was pretty much intact.

Might make a nice project for someone. He only wanted $350 for the boat with a decent (useable) trailer, but since I couldn't use the parts I wanted, I passed.

Anyone in the MN area who wants contact info let me know and I'll point you at him.
