I have a 1998 Johnson 200 with a blown powerhead. The damage is extensive and a Dealer has a 2003 225 Evinrude Ficht that appears to be about the same price as what it would cost me to replace the powerhead.

He gave me a printout of the data from the engines computer however, I can only tell the obvious items.

Engine hours 452
65% of the time was between 500-1000 rpm
13% @ 1000-1500 rpm
7% @ 4500-5000 rpm
the rest at various other speeds, none over 6500 rpm

Compression Values
#1- 115 lb, 2-125 lb, 3- 120 lb, 4- 115 lb, 5- 117 lb, 6- 115 lb.

Highest Temperature achieved 158-175 2.7%, 140- 157 54%, 122-139 21%.

No Stored Current or Hard Faults.

Recurring Faults:
Code Times Last (Hrs) Description
25 11 223 EMM Temp above expected range
22 3 110 Overheat switch closed
43 1 110 Engine temp above expected range
48 5 169 Air temp below expected range
47 4 169 Air temp sensor fault
16 1 449 Intermittent loss of sync detected.

The Dealer said the engine was traded in with a bad stator and the guy wanted to upgrade. This was one engine from a set of twins, saltwater use.

I have all 3 pages of the computer print out but the forum will not allow a posting of a file that large.

Any opinions on this?
I would be thankful for any help.

The problem ficht engines were primarily the 60-degree small block engines (150/175) built prior to 2000 under the OMC label. Once Bombardier took over in 2000 and up, their products were well engineered. The big block (90) degree 200/225 engines did not suffer from the myriad of ficht problems that everyone remembers, whether they were built by either OMC or Bombardier.

Thanks for the opinions.
Do the values on the print out cause any reason for concern?

We'll assume the dealer is going to give you the same warranty on the rebuilt powerhead and the 03 motor (or there may be factory warranty left on the 03). So for the same money you'll have a 5 year newer motor and inherit 5 years worth of advances. We'll also assume the motor is in about the same cosmetic condition of yours, or better.

Based on a test run, on your boat, I'd almost have to think it's hard to find a downside.

One other thing - if this was one of a set it may have the counter gearcase. It'll work and work well, props may be a bit harder to find and, assuming yours is a standard rotation, your prop won't work if the 03 is a counter gearcase. If so, you could still use your gearcase.
