I need to replace one of my themostat to exhaust manifold hoses and want to make sure I order the correct one because I will not be able to return for a replacement or credit. If I am looking at my engine, which is a 454, and the front of the engine is pointing toward me would the port side be to my left?
Thanks

Re: Need Orientation

Standing at the helm, looking forward, port is left, starboard is right. It does not change if you turn around and look at the motor.

So if I am looking at my motor and the front of the motor is facing me my left would actually be the starboard side of the engine. Correct?

Re: Need Orientation

What's the serial number of your engine. Without that, you have no idea if you have the right hose or not. Year means nothing.

Re: Need Orientation

imho, ya need a boater safety class (orientation). they'll explain the port, starboard thing to you. it's one of the more basic things to know about a boat. and there's much more to be learned... get a book called chapman's seamanship and boat handling. this book is thick like a dictionary. super thick with info. it has much knowledge in it. as for your engine. use an oem service manual (which are applicable by s/n)l + look up parts on a site that has oem part numbers on it (again which are applicable by s/n). i like this one. if ya want aftermarket parts the oem part number will let ya know if the aftermarket part is compatible.
as for port and starboard. if an American car were a boat, the driver side would be port, the passenger side would be starboard.... and as grub1grub2 said. port and starboard never change no matter what your orientation is to the boat.

Re: Need Orientation

Facing toward the bow on the boat the port is on your left. Left and port have the same number of letters so it is easy to remember. The port is always the port no matter which way you look on or off the boat.

To try and simplify it for you... If you were sitting on top of your motor facing forward (with the sterndrive in back of you) the left side of the engine would be the port side. Don S is correct. You need a serial number to know for sure which part number to get. I also agree with ziggy. If you're having trouble with things like port and starboard you should take a boating safety course. I think you would find it very beneficial.

Re: Need Orientation

Just to clear the air I have taken a basic boating safety course which I learned all about starboard and port. I just want to make sure I order the correct hose because they are usually not returnable. I will check my serial number. Can someone please tell me where I can find my OEM hose number for my engine being that this hose is on the starboard side.
Thanks
