Need outdrive, bellhousing advice

I have a '96 Osprey Fisherman Pilothouse. It is my first boat and evidently I'm not extremely savvy.

Owner I purchased from put a new long block in a few years ago, 280 hrs on it when I got it. He purchased from local Ford dealership and installed all the marine components on it. It's a a 5.0 FL, carb engine of course. Consumes fuel like a pig. (14 gph according to flow meter, have yet to recalibrate after tune up). Of course my boat displaces 4500 lbs dry, so it's not exactly light.

I want to repower in a year or two and go MPI, perhaps a 5.7 instead of the 5.0. The issue is at the same time I'll be moving to a GM block instead of Ford. I've found a complete GM 5.7 MPI, with computer, etc. Just drop it in. My issue is that I'm concerned about the bellhousing and getting the entire thing mated up to my outdrive, a Volvo Penta DP 290 C-1. The sales rep seems to think I can use the same bellhousing on the GM block as the Ford block. Looking for some clarification please. This is pretty much my only route as the local Volvo guy didn't seem to think he could order me a bobtail that would fit.

Help! and Thanks!

Ayuh,... The block flange bolt pattern is different between Chevy, 'n Ford...

I'm sure you can do what you want,...
The only question is how Much needs to be replaced to line things up...

your going to have to use the GM bell housing.
and make sure the pads for the engine mounts will work.
the ford mounts are in a different location than the GM.
