I checked the Evinrude site and it only goes back to '68. I have a '60 40 horse. I either need to replace parts or purchase a new one but I don't know the part number. This is what it says on the existing starter: Auto Lite MDW 4101M-12V. I can't seem to cross reference that number with anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Hi, Scott.

Please reassure me that your starter needs replacing. How did you determine that it is bad?? 3 out of 5 starters that are replaced are not bad but have bad wiring to them.

If you really need one try www.tcoutboard.com.

Thanks for the word of warning. I had a friend come over today and he tore the starter apart and cleaned it. He put the center copper portion of the starter on his drill, spun it while holding a file to the copper in order to clean it up a bit. He put it all together and it works perfectly! It is great when you have friends that know what they are doing. He also took the carb apart. The only thing I need is a new float. The old one is split and does not float in gas. After much fiddling we got all of the ports opened. I think that I may have found a float on Laing's for $15. Again, thanks for the advice.

Get the whole carb kit with the float as long as you have it apart and rebuild the carb. Not much more effort or expense.

I agree, BTW I have the Manual for the Evinrude Lark IV if you want it. Send me a Personal Post and I will send it to you.

Re: Need part # for '60 evinrude starter (40 hp)

I was at the local boat repair shop the other day. They pulled out the parts list on the old evinrude motors and found my 1960 Lark II (35520). I asked them if I could make a copy of it. They informed me that their copy machine was down but that I could take it home and make a copy of it if I returned it immediately, which I did. Now I have a hard copy of the exact parts manual that I need. My wife is amazed at how excited I am over this.
I am still working on the carb of this great little motor I picked up at the dump. I told my wife that the money I saved on the started can be spent on other parts. Some how she doesn't appreciate my savings techniques.

Just print out what a new motor would cost. A new 40 HP will be in he $4,000 -$5,000 range.
