Last January I purchased a 27? 1993 Chaparral Cabin Cruiser for cheap. Reason it was so cheap was that the sterndrive was a Bravo 3 and it had succumbed to a devastating episode of electrolysis. There were holes straight through the gear case. Amazingly, the upper gear case gears were salvageable (the lower gears were toast although the shafts are still useable).
Eventually I want to replace it with a new-ish Bravo 3, but in the meantime I?m scraping together a used Bravo 1 setup. I bought a brand new complete lower gear case (with gears) on Craigslist. Then I found a pristine upper gear case housing also on Craigslist. So I?m going to put the salvaged upper gears into the upper gear case and then mate it w. the brand new lower gear case.
My concern is that putting the salvaged gears into a completely different gear case is apparently a pretty technical process. I?m told you need to carefully shim and re-set gear lash for the new setup. However, I?m having a hard time finding information on exactly how to do this. I have Mercruiser Service Manual #11 (Section 3A) and it doesn?t really seem to talk about it. Can anyone point me to resources on this subject?
