hey i have a mercruiser alpha one drive im trying to put it back together and where the lower half connects to the upper. the drive shaft? (if thats the proper word), the spot where it goes into the upper unit has two o-ring/seals? they seem like there inside . how would i get them out or replace? or should i just leave them in? attached is the pic maybe that could show you a little better. my explaination probably isnt the best.

It looks to me like the o-ring from the drive shaft came off and is still in there. Later models took the o-ring out of the equation completely, and it is recommended to not put it back on. The other is a seal that you can simply pry off and replace. Here's a pic of one I took out - badly rusted up, compared to a new one:

if, you have a alpha1 or mc-1 MR. you don't have the oring that fm is talking about. the mc-1 and mc-1 R may have that oring..

the seals yer referring too, one is easy, one ain't to get out. they have no orings so perhaps what your seeing is a seperated seal, like in fm's pic, where the rubber seal peals away from the metal part.
the bottom one ya just pry out and hammer in a new one. the seal above that would be the last part you take out of the upper when you fully disassemble it. or the first thing you put in when fully reassembling the drive. in other words, very hard to go get.
i've done the easy one, and it is easy. never did me the other one. i've just pressure tested my drive and it passes so i ain't gonna go disturb it till it fails.. imho...

in relooking at that pic. it does look like the oring fm is talking about. off a mc-1 drive. so the question is, have ya got the oring groove on the drive shaft in the lower or not? irregaurdless, if that is an oring like fm says, discard it and go w/o...

I really don't know what the problem is with people posting the year, or model number of their drive or engine. All we here is I have a Mercruiser that .................
Sorry, but over the past 40 years, all of Mercruisers drives have gone through many changes.
Ok, so much for the pet peeve/rant.
I did check, you have approx, an 87 165 (sorry about that) with an Alpha outdrive.
Head up to the Adults Only sticky and download service manual #6. then look in section 3A, there are complete details on how to change those seals.
