I have had nothing but trouble with the motor since the day I bought. If I idle for any period of time the boat takes forever to plane off. The motor spit, sputter, and kicks trying to clear out the 2 dead cylinders before it finally gets going. I have taken it to the shop 3 times and they say this is normal. They have worked on the carbs and it has gotten somewhat better, althougt not great. Now my biggest problem is when I come off of 3/4 to WOT. The motor is very rough, kicks and dag near shakes itselfs off the boat. I have never seen anything like this in all my life. I guess it is flooding the 2 dead cylinder when I get off the throttle. Is this a bad designed motor? What can be done to fix this problem? Can I change the 2 carbs where it will run on all 4 cylinders? When this motor is running on only the 2 cylinders at idle isn't this flooding the other 2 cylinders with fuel and washing the cylinders and bearings causing motor damage? Also it is very hard to crank when I first get to the lake. I sometimes have to crank on it for a few minutes before it start. Is there some trick to getting it started without so much cranking? I'm sure there has been others that have had some of these problems  . I'm willing to try anything to get this problem fixed. Everyone I have talked to at the mercury dealer, including having a factory rep come out ride in the boat and said that it was pretty bad still did nothing to fix the problem. Please help me guys with what can be done to fix this motor.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

You need to convince the dealer and the Mercury rep to follow up on their initial concern. If this motor has in fact never run right from day one and the dealer is aware of it , it would seem to me that you have a legitimate claim to have the dealer work through Mercury if necessary to make it right.

this engine is very finicky at best. it does not like to run cold, does the engine have a thermostat in it, is it working, normal operating temp is 120. this engine will also load up at idle if trim is tilted all the way down at idle. carb idle mixture is very very critical, small turns of mixture screws make a huge difference to the engine. bottom 2 carbs do not flow at idle speed.
improper sync and link will cause engine to bog.
accelerator pump check valve can go bad and dump raw fuel into engine causing loading up of engine
did engine ever run normal?
