I've been wanting to buy a boat. I have couple that I'm interested in and I need some advice and if they are good boats. 1st boat is a 1995 Monterey Montura 19'6 bow rider with a 180 hp mercrusier 135 hrs on the engine and always stored in building. Asking price $6500.00 like new condition. The other is a 1989 Regal Valanti 220XL Cuddy Cabin with 5.7 mercruiser Alpha 1 outdrive. This boat is in great shape but the owner had the top end of engine rebuilt due to a blown head gasket. He replaced everything but the block rings and bearings. Selling price for the Regal is $6500.00 also. Price wise are they in the ball park of what they may be worth? I know I need to get each checked out good by a marine mechanic. Tried the NADA but a lot of the add ons to list I don't even know what they are. Thanks

Both brands have really good reps, I owned a Monterey for a number of years, it was a great boat. $6500 for the Regal is over priced, but the Monterey seems ok...

Water test them and make sure they don't leak. That might help you make a decision. (That and handling of course).

seatrial--that way you can see which fits you better and you may find that neither is the case--don't rush and take your time--may be a good idea to use a boat surveyor to look it over--money well spent and they have a trained eye--btw welcome to iboats:D

I think you may need to better narrow down what you're looking for in a boat. I can't imagine comparing a cuddy with a bow rider....2 very different boats. Anyway, the price on the Regal is way high.

You need to decide what you want to do on the boat ie fishing vs tubing vs skiing vs cruising. Then you can look for a boat that fits your needs and budget. Also consider that almost anything boat related will end up taking longer and costing more than you think it will.

Well we took the Monterey out this evening. Boat planed out pretty fast. Speed was around 45-48 mph. Ran the boat for about 45 minutes and about 1/2 gallon of water came out of plug when we loaded the boat. Water got on the back of boat when owner gunned it to load onto the trailer so I'm guessing thats where the water came from. Motor started right up and idled smoothly and motor was quite while we ran down the lake. The prop was dinged and if I buy it I'll install a stainless prop on the boat. I took some pics with my phone and I'll try to loaded them up later. Trailer is a wesco with surge brakes single axle. He seems pretty firm at $6500 since we had another guy looking at it also.

I've taken the Regal off the table. It will be very hard to launch by myself and I'm really wary of the engine after all the work done on it.

Agree 100% (on both)
Sounds like you need to figure out what you want your boat to be used for & decide what style to look for-
Don't rush in! For $6500 you can find the boat you want

Re: Need some advice. I've never owned a boat before.

Me I want to cruise and fish. My kids will want to ski and tube. I know this Monterey is a ski boat but the way I look at it if I can get on the water I can fish; maybe not as comfortable as a center console or pontoon but I can wet a hook (plus my wife likes the bow rider type of boats). I'm really not in a big hurry to buy a boat I've been looking for a couple of months and boats are for sale everyday. A little humor here. Me and my son-in law went to look at a Mustang gt convertible a few years back. The saleslady said they didn't make many of these and that I would be missing on a rare find. I looked her and said "lady they make these cars everyday" her lower jaw hit the pavement and my son in law cracked up. Didn't buy the car instead bought a F150 supercrew.
