Ok guys. I need a guru. I've got an 89 40 hp that formerly was a VRO, and UFI model that someone had converted. So it's got a regular fuel pump, and a regular CD2 pack. The problems with this thing are as follows:
The synchronization was a mess, throttle roller not set where it's supposed to be, timing not even close, and can't get the thing to where it will start and idle to save my life. Whoever had their hands in it the last time had all these things out of whack apparently so it would run. So, me, being the genius that I am, decided to set it all the way it's supposed to be set, and now I've got a motor that won't run. I followed the OMC bible on synchronization to the letter. When I hit it with the timing light, it's showing ignition AFTER TDC while cranking! There's not enough adjustment on the timing arm to move it to where it'll fire at TDC while cranking, let alone even check it for maximum timing at 5000 RPM. I'm at a loss for direction. What the hell could be wrong that it won't even idle? The carbs were rebuilt to OMC specs, the fuel pump is brand new, it's got 122 lbs compression on each cylinder, both cylinders have ignition (jumps 1/4" gap, nice, thick, and blue). I haven't got into checking the timer base or stator yet, but with the spark that this thing has, I'm assuming that's not even an issue. It's almost like the flywheel key is sheared or something, because the timing is showing up after TDC while cranking. Again, I'm at a loss, and could use advice on where to look next.
Thanks guys.
