Need Some Help/Info Please

Hello. I have a 1973 Sea King 9.6 hp. motor. I recently changed the lower unit grease in it. My question is: How much grease does an outboard of this size hold? When I drained the unit I only got aprox 1 1/2 to maybe 2 oz. of grease out of it. I was thinking that the grease had possibly leaked out but when I refilled it ( according to instructions: in the bottom hole until it comes out the top then replace top screw and finally bottom) in doing this I would guess I got about as much in as what I drained. It just really doesn't seem like enough grease to me. Is this normal? Please forgive me for being so ignorant of this procedure but I am fairly new to working on my own motors. I usually have them serviced at the dealer. Thank you for any advice and info you have. God Bless. Dave

Sounds like you refilled it correctly through the bottom drain hole until it came out the top hole. That's all it can hold, remember that area is filled with gears and bearings and 2 or 3 ounces of oil goes a long way. I have an old 3HP Tanaka and it might take about 2 ounces to fill the lower unit. Good Luck!

You never want to add more oil or grease to a lower end as you can blow the seals that way.
