I have a Sears 12hp model: 571.58931. I'm told this is made by west bend for Sears/Elgin. There is also another model of this motor that is 5/7.5/12hp selectable via key.

I need some info on the motor
What is the default turns for this carb? Low speed needle? High speed needle?

points need to be gapped at .020 right?
plugs should be gapped at .030?
What weight gear oil for the lower?
And I believe the fuel mixture is 16:1.

I tore the carb apart and tried playing with the needles to get it going, but I just keep getting gas all over the plugs and it wont start. So I figure I ought to get some more info.

The model # you quoted may be the reason for lack of response. Check it again---VERY carefully! If it turns out to be -58981 then you have a 1959 12 horse.

Start here <http://www.yankeeaomci.org/feature_outboard-2.htm> to look for tune-up data.

Getting gas all over the plugs means it is severely flooded, or you have no spark. I'm betting on the latter.
